Dell Inspirion 1521 laptop monitor will not stay on

My dell inspirion 1521 laptop screen will not stay on. What could be the problem? I can hook an external monitor up and it works fine the laptop monitor will not stay on longer that a few seconds

sounds to me like either a bad inverter board or a bad backlight. Either way something will have to be replaced.
