P7P55D-E LX SATA3 hard drive not recognized in SATA3 port

It occurred to me last night that I could be getting more performance out of my Western Digital Caviar Black hard drive (WD1002FAEX), and that I simply forgot to plug it into one of the two sata 6GB ports. So I shut down, plugged the sata cable (which says 6GB on the cable itself) into the appropriate port, and nothing happens. When booting, I am asked to insert a bootable device (I am paraphrasing).

In the bios menu, the drive itself does not show up. Only when it is plugged back into one of the blue sata ports does bios recognize the drive and boot as normal.

Any ideas what I need to do to get this thing working in a sata 6GB port? Bios is up to date as of 3 days ago.

  1. Your controller may be disabled in the BIOS (and it's best left that way!) - see comments here...
