Hello, im looking into upgrading my current 955 C1 (bought it when they still cost 245$ :(  ) and 4890, to a i5 750/860 and a 5850/470. primarily, im looking into boards right now. i currently have a MSI 790FX mobo, and i love it, as well as MSI as a company, so any MSI board gets a few extra points from me. it needs to be able to do xfire/sli at atleast x8 x8, and have good oc'ing features. so far, this is what i have:

those are the main ones im looking at, feel free to add more, or give advice, experiences, or information. on a side note, how much added performance would i see from a i7 860 over a 955, and how much performance should i expect from a 5850/470 over a 4890. or whats your opinion on 470 vs 5850. personally, im favoring the 5850, mainly due to heat, energy, and cost, and only losing by a small amount.

Hello
Between those,i would go with ASUS P7P55D-E Pro because it has a good price/performance ratio and has a good OC'ng capability and supports SLI/CF at dual 8x mode.
As for i7 860 vs 955,well in gaming the difference isn't much but overall i7 860 would about 20% faster in apps/games.
As for the graphic card, well a 5850 is about 30% faster than a 4890.
And finally, for 5850 vs 470, well 470 is about 10-15% faster but its noisier and has more power consumption.

what is your opinion on the msi gd 80/85? sata 6 isnt useful yet, usb 3 isnt used widely yet, so thats not terribly important (but nice to have) but i have heard that the 80/85 are the best, or the best values in the p55 lineup. and so either the 5850 or the 470 is a good advancement over the 4890 im assuming. and yeah, anybody know how bad the heat is on the 470 compared to the 5850?

Those MSI boards are good too, but i recommended the ASUS one because i think it has the best price/performance ratio between them,It also has USB 3.0 and Sata6(which i know aren't useful yet) and its price is lower than MSI P55-GD85,(which has pretty much the same features) also according to the reviews, it has a better OC'ng capability than P55-GD65.
As for the VGA,yes both 5850 and 470 are significantly faster than a 4890.
And for the heat, check this review

hmmm, 5850 is a pretty cool card, i knew that, as well as the fermi cards running HOT. however, i have my opinions on this, but what card would you say is the better buy, assuming they both cost the same (newegg selling msi 470 for $299)

Well its a matter of opinions, i would choose 5850 because although its slower the difference isn't huge, also it runs cooler and quieter. It depends on that you prefer a 10% faster card with higher power consumption/noise or a slower card with a lower power consumption/noise

the 5850 is, IMO the better card for exactly those reasons. also, having a 4890, im familiar with ati.
