CPU - I've got an i7 940, but need a Heat sink
OVERCLOCKING: Only if I can do it for free.
SLI OR CROSSFIRE: I don't care
MONITOR RESOLUTION: ~22". Heavy photo editing. Don't know much about current displays. Help
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: 6G of RAM assumed. Thinking of ASUS P6T MB. Want OK graphics, but will never have more than one card. Need a case and ps. Want a nice keyboard and mouse. Need a dual layer dvd burner, but don't need blu-ray. Thinking or 3 1T drives as RAID 5. I think I need an SSD to hold OS and apps. Need a wireless router. How do I decide on WIN 7 32 or 64 bit?

That meets your requirements which are quite high for a mid-to-high-end pc including a monitor. The video is ok for casual gaming with low to medium image quality. If you play 1st person shooters or driving games, upgrade to this:

One of my buddies uses that Dlink router. Same model. I set it up for him. It excels at Wifi-N. Also, does 4 x 1Gb LANs. The P6T has a Gb LAN. Hook it up to the router. The router comes with a 6-feet CAT5 cable. You'd need a CAT5E or CAT6 cable for Gb. A few bucks at ebay. Internet will be as fast as your typical DSL/cable. Local LAN will be flying if you have a Gb server. I do. So does my buddy.
Price is getting up there. Wondering about places to chop:
- 3 drives may be overkill. I already use cloud backup and an external 1T USB drive. Is it dumb to non-RAID this system? Maybe a single 2T drive instead?
- Heat sink. Is an el-cheapo HS OK if I don't overclock?
- I will get the better router, thanks.
Storage - Well, you wanted RAID 5 in your original post. 3 drives is the minimal requirement. Personally, unless you have 4+ drives, forget RAID 5. Just get a 30GB Vertex SSD + 1 TB HDD. Install OS & apps on SSD & back stuff up on HDD. You can get just the SDD then if you have backup. Ditch the 3 TB drives.
