Have no sound from head phones

Hello, I cant get sound from the headphone jack, I have double checked all settings. S/pdif is not enabled. What do I have to do to get the brand new set of headphones to function.

Tried them on another computer - maybe they are defective.

Tried them on another computer - maybe they are defective.

The headphones are brand new. Have checked them on another computer and Hifi system, they work perfectly well. My computer has a Realtek HD sound application. Maybe I should just get a new sound card.
The computer has a XP operating system.
What are the crucial settings for such a sound system?

I have tried the head phones on another computer and they work. They work on my stereo set. The "Realtec system" is on my computer, an ACER Computer. I still have had no luck getting the sound through the head phones.
