I am running XP and purchased a Sandisk 512k cruzer flash drive. I have
inserted it into the usb ports of two different laptops, one with usb 1.1 and
one with usb 2.0.

In the one with usb 1.1, I get the message that new hardware has been
installed, but that it is designed for usb 2.0. However, I never get a drive
letter assignment.

On the one with usb 2.0, there is no message or seeming awareness of the
insertion or removal of the product and I never get a drive letter assignment.

Your suggestions will be appreciated. Please post reply to this newsgroup or

Does the one with USB 2.0 have norton anti virus installed? If so, just
before plugging in the flash drive, turn off auto-protect (remember to turn
it back on when you take the drive out).

Hi Carl
Is there any network drives mapped. I had the same trouble on my laptop that
is connected to my network. I had to manually give the USB drive a drive
letter.
Go into Computer Management under Administrator Tools in Control Panel and
the in Computer Management click on Disk Management. Then right click on you
USB Drive and click change drive letter. Change it to something that you
know is not used and click OK. I changed mine to drive letter R for
Removable.
Hope this helps.
Mark
