Not ready for upgrade yet but need new motherboard

Right now I'm running an AMD Athlon 64 x2 4400 with an Asus A8N-E and 2 gigs of DDR memory. I'm thinking I have a motherboard problem since my sound card and onboard sound are suddenly not being recognized after a high pitched sound coming from the speakers. Since I can't just replace the motherboard with the same model I'm trying to find something compatible with my system to hold me over until I build an entire new system. I noticed that my cpu should work with the older AM2 motherboards but I would also have to purchase new ddr2 ram since my ddr ram will not be compatible. Am I on the right track here or am I missing something? So far I was thinking of.

Your CPU is socket 939 and does not work with socket AM2. You either have to pick up a cheap replacement board of ebay or by a cheap sound card to carry you over.
