wasn't too sure on whether or not to create this Poll in MG's or in files. figuring that there are both longer and higher quality files i figured files would be best... But post you how many MG's GBs you have too if you like to compare.

I'd answer, but I'd have to kill anyone who saw it.
Lots just leave it at "Alot".

Heh, I'd fall in that catagory too. Honestly though, the most impressive collection of mp3's I've ever seen was on Retroborg on #mp3_collective on undernet. If I remember correctly he had a couple terrabytes worth and something over 100k (songs - had duplicates that would have easily pushed it well over that number.) last I heard (functioned as a channel file server).

thats weak, i got two of those in my car.

Hehe, I wouldn't know for the life of me how someone even knows 30 000 songs. Once you hear one, kiss it goodbye for a millenia on your WinAMP playlist.

10000+ WHOOOIEE! Me? I have less than 100 for sure. With broadband connections to the internet there's no real reason for me to store them on my drive. I don't listen to many anyways.
My OS features preemptive multitasking, a fully interactive command line, & support for 640K of RAM!
no [-peep-] eh?! I have a lot on my machine but i too have BB and listen to internet radio frequently...
But as for 30 000 track... it would take three whole months to play every track... at 4 min a song!

If I just do a filecount in my music folder I get over 10K. Apparently though I have 4000 or so images for the cd covers. So winamp says I have 6887 and windows (doing a search for ogg, mp3, and wma) says I have 6886. So I'm right around there. I haven't figured out which format that extra file is. Maybe I'll search for a wav file.

did i said 982.
Well it's only 980 MP3's
Inlcuding 2 WMA files.
ogg vorbis seems to produce better audio quality than mp3. But the problem is that their not much yet of a standard, many of my friends who listens to music using their pc prefers mp3's. And MP3's CDs can now be played using a mini-component.
But ogg vorbis still is good for multi-channel audio for games (UT2003).
my best guess is over 40,000. in that folder, it reports 61,733, but i don't count the remixes and i do have about 7,000 dups at different bit rates.
just so you know, they are in all different languages. many of the stuff i have, i don't even understand

That's a very good question.
I have nearly 1000 mp3's but i always listen to my favorites only. A estimate of 60 songs, i think.

geee... i prolly have stuff that even the bush men in africa liten to. i started it way back in the days of imesh, bear share and napster... actually even before that. and yes i've heard every single one of them, but when it comes to finding one i listened to and finding it again... well it just doesn't happen very often.

I too have a lot of music that i don't always listen to... but i have organized all my music.. to some degree as i have D/Led them...
I first have every group in its own folder. and then i have them in a type of music folder.
unfortunatly alot of groups don't all play the same stuff. I listen to Industrial EBM alot and alot of those bands have some very mellow stuff.
I want to go though all my songs some how and lable its genre so i can just select them all that way but im not all to sure how i would do that.
that and well i have 1000 tracks with only a few 100 labled correctly.
any ideas as to how i would go about this.
BTW i too have a lot of music that i don't understand, mostly german, but a few other languages are in there too

MP3 is no match for Ogg Vorbis. It's way better than MP3. It's main rival in MP4/AAC. It sounds better than MP4, but the difference is little.
Another sweet thing about Ogg Vorbis is- there's only one standard encoder and not much setting to mess with. Just set the quality level and go! MP3's have many encoders, and many confusing settings (especially if you're using VBR in LAME MP3)

i only use default 128kbps / joint stereo when encoding mp3's to reduce size.

what is the file size of Ogg Vorbis stuff?
what are the player? will win amp play them?
and what would i need to convert all my files and CDs... sould i want to bother with this...

don't bother. mp3 is a standard and thats more important. i prolly would use ogg if it was a standard

i use wma as second standard of encoding.

do you even bother for .WAV files?

Ogg Vorbis is a standard, but it's a different standard. In fact, it's real "standard" than compared to MP3. There's no numerous different encoders and confusing settings, only 1 standard encoder, and very few settings to mess with. You don't have to worry about getting a Xing encoded file or compressed with fast/low quality mode file

My experience tells-
MP3 128 kbps = Ogg Vorbis 80 kbps/q=1(sometimes 64 kbps/q=0 or 96kbps/q=2)
MP3 160 kbps = Ogg Vorbis 96 kbps/q=2(sometimes 80 kbps/q=1 or 112kbps/q=3)
MP3 192 kbps = Ogg Vorbis 112 kbps/q=3(sometimes 128kbps/q=4)

There's countless players that will play Ogg Vorbis files. With DirectShow filter, you can play Ogg Vorbis in all direct show based players (e.g. Windows Media Player). There's also QuickTime plug-in available for Ogg Vorbis.
WinAmp 2.8 comes bundled with Ogg Vorbis plug-in. For earlier versions- just install the plug-in.
For a complete list of Ogg Vorbis supported software go to this page http://www.vorbis.com/software.psp?pid=2

I won't recommend converting your current MP3s to Ogg Vorbis, since it's it will degrade quality, at least theoritically. You can re-encode your CDs to Ogg Vorbis and delete MP3 version of these CDs
You should bother with Ogg Vorbis if you want to save disk space ~40% or want much better quality files without spending more diskspace.

dood if it was more of a stansard than mp3, there wouldn't be stand alone mp3 players, in-car mp3 players or the many other mp3 playing devices. instead, there would be ogg players.

I have an ogg player in my bathroom. Don't you?
I download about 850 oggs from Kazaa every day, too. Who doesn't?
Most of the people doesn't own portable MP3 players. So it doesn't matter much. And you can always convert selected songs Ogg files to MP3 for playing in your portable player.

you are missing the point spitty. no matter what excuses there might be for choosing ogg over mp3, mp3 is still going to be the standard (at least for the time being). there are many things in life that are better than what they compete with, but its not always the better solution/item/product that wins the stage.
also you have to remember that most people can make a mp3 CD to play in their cars, but if you told them they have to convert ogg to mp3, they'd be lost. not to mention mp3 devices are becoming more popular every day. just the fact that when you mentioned ogg in a computer forum and turned some heads with questions should be clue enough for you dood.
aubby is one of those guys who has a mp3 player in his car and most of my friends have it too. it might be a different story in asia, but here in north america mp3 devoces are very popular.
