I just switched from ATTWS to Cingular, and with my new phone, I only
had the small blue "GSM" icon showing for about half a day. But now,
for several days, the phone is apparently on digital roam.

Anyone else notice this?

This seems to have a few minor consequences, but no extra charges.

What handset are you using? How can you tell it's on digital roam?
What does the banner say?

It simply says CIngular. The reason I believe it's on roam is because
that blue icon (usually top center of screen) is not lit. Also, I have
the Sony Ericsson PC card, and the card manager software says it's on
roam -- anywhere in Portland.

I'm going to call cust serv and see what they say.

I'd like to be off roam, because I suspect that it impacts data
transmission speeds. Also, some features do not work on the phone and
card...

Thanks.

portland oregon has NO cingular towers, they are all at&t..
so you are roaming permenently.
in the past the phone said cingular extend, now it just says cingular.
if you have an unbranded or unlocked phone it will show at&t or cingular and
turn on the roaming icon.

I wouldn't say that. Cingular is going to eventually transfer that
infrastructure to the Cingular system.

Doesn't that depend upon the SIM card? My roaming indicator doesn't
ever turn on with my phone, but the carrier banner changes when I pick
up a different company. So far I have seen Fido, MCELL, Rogers AT&T,
Rogers, T-Mobile, Cingular, USA 590, AT&T Wireless, Suncom, Cell One,
and Cellular One.

OK, So I've found out that my cell phone was apparently not roaming,
but my PC Card apparently is. Customer service is closed Sundays to
find out the details...

Anyone have any PC Card experience to share, vis a vis roaming?
