My memory card suddenly has weird files and my files are gone

I took over 600 photos at a concert and those took up 3.23gb out of the 4gb memory card.
As I was viewing the photos, it suddenly stopped responding and my computer was forced shutdown. When I turned it on, the photos were gone and in replace are some weird files with weird letters of formats I have never seen.
My photos were gone. However, these files took up a lot of apace, even more than the memory card capacity of 4gb. When I checked the properties of the memory card, it still says that 3.13gb was used up. Can someone help me on this? This are really important photos..
