Laptop Hardware Problem

my mate's laptop just wiped all his files and came up with an error message saying 'failed to save all the components for the file \\system32\\00006272. the file is corrupted or unreadable. this error may be caused by a PC hardware problem.' his laptop is just blank with only the trash bin, internet explorer and microsoft word left. Help?

This is a new virus I have run into it also the files are not gone just hidden. go to controll panel and click on folder options click view then click show hidden files and folders. Ok now you can see everything open up my computer and right click on c and uncheck hidden it will try to unhide every file on the drive so wait this can take 10 20 min dont worry about errors as some files cant be unhidden. Now I have never sucessfully gotten rid of this malware so my next step would be remove the drive and stick it in another computer and copy off the files you need since you can now see them. after that reload the laptop...
