Dell inspiron 1521 nothing on monitor except mouse pointer

Hi Computer starts up but does not display the dell or windows logo then after it seems like it has loaded the screen is completey black EXCEPT for the arror of the mouse pointer. That is the only thing on the screen. It moves around but when I click anywhere on the screen, nothing happens at all. Can anyone give advice as to what to do? Thanks

Try booting into safe mode. then do a system restore. Otherwise reinstall windows.

Thanks for the reply. I did try in safe mode and cant even get there either. Black screen
