Toshiba external hard drive

Hello,
My external hard drive is not pulling everything up that I just saved yesterday. I used it for all of my photos and I am editing photos for a client and they are all gone. The hard drive runs when it is plugged in, but will not pull everything up. I also have all my graduate papers on there for my current school. What do I need to do? These things are needed now!!
