A Compaq TC4400 has recently been given to me with the task of checking it for viruses because it is acting really "slow".
Upon numerous virus and malware scans, I did find a couple pieces of malware but they have been removed. I have removed malware, checked the hard drive using seatools, ran memtest86, deleted temporary internet files, and defragmented. There still remains a very noticeable hard freeze upon boot up after a few programs are loaded in the system tray.
After these few are loaded, the system no long responds to anything but ctrl alt delete for around 60-90 seconds. At that point the rest of the programs load in and the system seems to run ok from that point. Through msconfig, I have pinpointed the offending service. When everything else except Workstation service is loaded, the computer boots normally. When workstation is added, there is the 60-90sec delay.
The person works at an office and may need shared printers/network drives. Does anyone have any advice about digging deeper into this issue or finding a solution that will allow workstation service to remain enabled but not cause the huge freeze at bootup?
