Amd phenom II unlocked for 3ds Max

Looking to upgrade my workstation. I use 3DS Max and CS3 all the time.

Limited budget, so I'm vectoring to the AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition.

I read the black comes unlocked. What does that mean in terms of rendering?

Also read where this processor was overclocked to 3.9ghz. Is that a stable daily use clocking, or should I leave the clock alone?

Unlocked has nothing to do with rendering. It means the multiplier for the CPU is unlocked and therefore gives you more options when overclocking.
You're on a limited budget and intend to overclock? Don't bother with the 965 BE get the 955 BE for less and can overclock the same.

Thanks, that will save me a little cash. So basically the 955 can be clocked to the just under 4 like the 965? OK.
