What does it mean when text disappears in windows

after about 20 minutes text begins to disappear...I run XP. It starts with the names under my Icons turning black then disappear. Then 90% of the text in my MSN homepage disappears, then in my email. If I shut down my computer and restart, everything goes back to normal.
