hi,
i have a x6800 cpu with 2x2gb kingston ddr800 ram on the intel d975xbx2 mainboard, can anyone tell me the best overclock for these as i can only seem to get the cpu to 3.33 and mem to 1000 using x10 multiplyer and fsb at 333, surely its capable of more?

Don't bother overclocking your memory, it's not worth it and will easily become unstable.

3.33 on an X6800 isn't bad, you can probably squeeze another 333Mhz out of it without putting it in jeopardy. Just raise the core voltage a little bit and crank the multiplier up to 11.

The 975 chipset wasn't designed to run at 333 like some of the other LGA775 platforms, you may have to go back down to 266 and increase the multiplier to 13 to compensate

hey, @dragonmurphy69. 3.33Ghz just enough for that cpu don't force it to get more GHz otherwise you'll be wash hand from your current cpu.
If you want more then think about the lifespan of your cpu so be happy with 3.33Ghz.

full load using prime95, get 35 on idle using corsair h70 water cooler, im not massivley bothered as this is my spare pc but thought id see what i can squeeze from it, im using a full tower (dragon rider) so loads of room for cooling

60C under Prime95 loads is perfectly normal, you can go as high as 75-80 under Prime95 loads. I wouldn't push the vcore too much higher though. The maximum voltage for the first generation core2 processors is 1.55 volts according to the datasheet.

It most likely is. Memory does not have that much headroom, bring it back down to its stock settings. You have an EE processor, just leave the FSB at 266 and play with the multiplier.

i know its an old chip but i think its impressive that a 7/8 yr old chip is still capable of running todays apps and games like diablo 3

Not at all. The CPU only ever executes from cache. The memory controller is responsible for swapping data to and from the cache in chunks when the CPU is working on other processes The impact of high speed memory is extremely minimal except in memory intensive applications.

when i built this comp i had no idea how much interest people had in it i didnt even realise i had built a machine meant for oc, it even runs pci 2 gpu's, dont know what people have against intel i love there work

People have things against Intel? You must be new here...

ive always looked on here for info never really got involved, my new pc is an i5 2500 the 3.3 extreme chip, by far better then amd!

AMD's been having a hard time getting all 4 proverbial cores running at the same time if you catch my drift
