I have an Hd 5850 and when i play games i set the fan to 40 percent and it sounds like a jet. Is this normal because i am afraid that if i turn it up the fan will explode. It gets jumpy so i think its overheating so i want to turn up the fan.

Take the card out and clean the dust out of the heatsink. Thats usually the problem once it starts to get really loud and begins to cool worse.

What if i took off the heatsink and put on artic silver, would that help?

Why are you "setting" the fan to 40%? Why not let ATI Overdrive do it for you. It'll only turn up the fan when needed. For my 5870, it rarely has to go over 30% under load and stays quiet at that speed.

It would help a bit with the temps but still check for dust clogging the Heat sink b/c thats usually the problem.

What program would i use to mintor my temps because in ccc it changes every 2 seconds so i cant tell what it is.

I have a 2nd monitor installed which I have ATI Overdrive opened and can watch the temps while playing (I did this a lot at first, but I don't watch it unless I have a reason).
