Okay so my current M/B is a M2A-VM by ASUS, AM2, 64bit

As of right now my CPU is a 64bit Phenom 9500 2.2ghz quad & it works.

I want to upgrade to this - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6819103471 I am not sure if my M/B supports this CPU?

You can find your CPU support list here
http://usa.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=St3pWpym8xXpROQS

Your board only supports the first generation Phenoms and Athlon X2's so the Phenom II isnt an option unfortunately.

Is Athlon X2 is Phenom better when it comes to performance?

On the site given to me above it says my board supports - Support AMD Socket AM2+/AM2 CPU

This is the Phenom II black edition socket type. CPU Socket Type Socket AM2+ my board says it supports AM2+ CPUs so I am kinda confused.

Phenom II and Athlon II are socket AM3 which can work in AM2+ boards. Your motherboard is an AM2 motherboard than can use AM2+ CPUs.

Go to the link hunter315 posted and read the CPU support list again - it does not list Phenom II or Athlon II so your board will not work with AM3 CPUs.

If you are still confused e-mail Asus directly and ask them to confirm.
