I5 build after lots of research

Forum Systems : New Build I5 build after lots of research

Word :    Username :

heya there,

so Christmas came around and I finally think I've got enough money to start my i5 build.

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: not sure, but at the and of Q1 2010 at the latest BUDGET RANGE: around $800 w/o video card

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: The computer will be used for gaming, and also hooking it up to a 42" HD TV for movies etc, as well as school work, surfing, and some video encoding/CAD/SPICE etc.

PARTS NOT REQUIRED: monitor, mouse, keyboard.

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: newegg's fine, everything else is too

PARTS PREFERENCES: none

OVERCLOCKING: Maybe

SLI OR CROSSFIRE: Yes, in the future

MONITOR RESOLUTION: 1920x1080

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: quiet would be great, but I know I can't have everything I want with my budget.

Here's a link to my newegg wishlist:
https://secure.newegg.com/WishList/ [...] D=15700748

As you can see, there's not yet a video card on there:
I am thinking about waiting until Fermi comes around/ATI prices go back down to get my 5850,
since I have an old Nvidia FX5700 lying around. This card should be enough for pushing non-gaming duties (web surfing, videos) with a 1920x1080 display, right?

Here are the components in short:

I5-750: nothing much to say here. $200

ASUS P7P55D-E Pro: seems to be a better choice than GIGABYTE for USB 3.0 & 6Gb/s SATA. $190

G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666): seems like good RAM, suggestions are welcome. $95

Arctic Cooling MX-2 Thermal Compound $8

CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W: heard it's a good PSU, figured I'd future-proof the system for CrossFire down the road. $110-$20 MIR=$90

AZZA Helios 910 Black case: seems to be a solid case from reviews, with a great price. $80-$30 MIR=$50

LITE-ON Black 24X DVD Writer: Don't really know what to look for there. $32

WD Caviar Black 750GB: I'd rather go with the Samsung F3, seems to be out of stock right now though. Any idea when they'll be back? $80

Does that look alright?

Thanks!
Andy

Edit: no need for an OS, I get W7 from the university for a couple measly bucks.

Bad choice for such a budget. From the sight of things right now and the huge problems manufacturing 40nm chips (I am not sure if it's the right size... still), when Nvidia releases Fermi, the prices risk to go up for both companies.

If I were you, I would go AMD and bought a good card right now. Still, a lot of AM3 motherboards got an IGP so you can skip the video card purchase for now (like Asus M4A78T-E). Playing the waiting game is pretty much useless and I am speaking of experience, I did back then when Nvidia released the 8800GTX. I was waiting for ATI HD3000 cards and I choose to purchase a 8800GTX a month after my build was done. I did a good thing because ATI was lagging behind and released a really bad product.

If I were you I would go AMD easily... I give the same damn answer... because it's the wisest thing to do with a budget bellow 1400$. If you don't crossfire... right now... you are wasting your money going with Intel.

Also, if you plan to crossfire... get a good case... a really good one designed for it. Cooler Master HAF 922 minimum... two 10 inch cards... some cases cannot even store a single one.

I am an electrical engineer and I used spice with a Core 2 Duo without any problems. Your university computers are even weaker than that and they will offer you a CAD liscence... your PII 955 will be a monster compared to what you will used at school.

Phenom II X4 955
Asus M4A78T-E
4 GB of DDR3 1600 (the brand you want)
OCZ Z 650W modular power supply 80 plus silver (can easily supply 2 5850 in CF)
Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB
Sony DVD burner (quiet)
Cooler Master Hyper 212+ HS
Cooler Master HAF 922 (minimum)

the ocz z series 650 is not modular, only 850 and 1kilowatt is modular. ^ is a good build but you can also try getting the c3 stepping of the pII, it is the one with the bigger logo to box size ratio than the normal 955, also the product code is gmbox not gibox is it's c3 stepping, c3 stepping is better in overclocking.

AFAIK there are no ASUS boards out yet with their solution for USB 3.0 and 6Gb/s SATA though?

I don't buy condemning someones build based on the 45 dollar price of a Intel cpu vs AMD. Thats less than 4% of his total budget. If the op wants the I5 (cpu of the year/decade?) he should go for it.

switched some stuff around... got a 650W power supply now that should still handle crossfire as per ATI's spec sheet for the 5850. Also switched case for an Antec 300.

I don't really think the 955 would be worth it... the MoBo would be about the same price, and the new stepping of the 955 is $180 of Newegg. Just thinking out loud of course, by all means convince me otherwise.

yea seems pretty good, the only thing i would reccomend you get is a 1TB harddrive..

also if your going to get a card, if u want to make this build last, go with directx11 cards, either 2 57XX in crossfire or one single 5870-5850 will give you amamzing gaming proformance

Yeah as I said in the OP I'll get a 5850 down the road.

I'll get more HD space later on.

swapped some things around.
Might be worth to wait and see if Newegg ever ends up doing a combo deal with the board I'm wanting... right now they got combo deals with the Gigabyte one.
