Can i install a wireless mouse on my 10-year old computer?

I tried to help someone install a wire-free mouse on her very old computer. she's running Microsoft Windows XP. Put the install disk in and we went through the install process without a hitch. A green light did come on the new mouse but couldn't get the cursor to work. Everytime I went into Control Panel and click on "mouse", then hardware, it showed her old mouse was still connected. Tried the install disk twice after shutting the computer off.

Maybe her computer is just too old??

The mouse should work. Sometimes there is a synchronize buton on the mouse, It may need lineof site, try a front usb port.
