Choosing components

I would like to rebuild or get a friend to rebuild my computer (it is home currently home built) I have no clue what to look for as far as motherboard, processor or anything else vital (too many numbers I don't understand)....I have an ATX case and 2 large maxtor hard drives, sony cd burner that can stay. I mostly do word processing and picture stuff. I currently have win xp pro on it and unless someone can convince me to upgrade, I love xp pro. Can someone just give me a combination of parts that go together? (motherboard, processor,memory, Video, sound and whatever else i need) Does it matter if the sound is on board?
