What card would work with my current specs but also long term?

What I'm trying to figure out is what graphics card I should get. My current one does the job but it's just okay. For instance, I have to tone down the settings on Dragon Age: Origins quite a lot, including turning off frame buffer effects. Borderlands I can't even enjoy because my graphics have to go very low but it still graphic lags.

Now, my motherboard doesn't have PCI Express 2.0, but I gather I could run a new card backwards compatible, as I plan on building a computer from scratch eventually, but I thought I could get a card first. Is this even a good idea? And, if so, what card would be a good choice for both my current specs and a future computer?

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400

Motherboard: Gigabyte G31M-S2 [Chipset: P35/G33/G31]

RAM: 2 x 1GB DDR2 (2GB Total; PC2-6400 [400 MHz]

Graphics: nVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT

Power: I think it's 300W.

CPU-Z reports slightly better specs for the graphics, and the motherboard link I posted should be the correct model.

The 8500GT's pretty much the best on that 300W PSU.
You could get a GT 240/4670 and try to run those it *might* work.
The 4670 needs a 400W PSU, so your putting 5000lbs on a brick rated for 4000lbs, you can hope it holds.

That's perfect! Thanks a lot! That should hold me over for a while 'til I can save up for a new rig.

Hmm yeah a new good quality PSU is always a good idea.

You have about the fastest dualcore cpu there is so about the only things holding you back
is your mobo,PSU and current video card.

About the cheapest upgrade would be a newer s775 mobo that is PCIe 2.0
a new PSU and videocard.

A dual core like your E84 still works great for current games but s775 is the older generation.
So its up to you.
