Sandisk cruzer 8gb troubleshooting

Hello,
My 8GB sandisk cruzer is driving me crazy. I have saved some files on it; when I open the file, it asks for what encoding I want. Any encoding I choose results in gibberish. I tried formatting it to FAT32, but got the same result. Is there anything else I can try?
Sincerely,
Joe Frustrated

    Hi jsmakkar,
I guess I should clarify the problem. I am able to copy files to the USB drive and then view them. I am trying to use the drive as a backup destination for a scheduling program I use. The problem is, a backup file does appear on the drive, but it is unreadable. It asks for what encoding is needed, but whatever I choose, does not work. I don't know what to try.
