To get the date to display in the toolbar, right-click on the toolbar, select the Taskbar tab, and enable the "Show the clock" checkbox. The clock will appear to the right of the icon corral.

If your taskbar is only one row high, it will only show the time. You have to make your taskbar bigger to add the date, or write an app that will live in the icon corral and show the date.
