Component selection for new gaming PC?

Wanting to build a new PC for gaming, hoping to get the best bang for my buck with a budget of $1500-$2000... I've always been fond of AMD products over Intel but it's been 6 years since my last build, so I am out of the loop. This also poses some questions for me, like whats the purpose of dual video cards and would I benifit from it? Here is what is set in stone... Keeping my monitor, so no need to exceed its capability(HP w1907).
Expectations: Needs to play the latest games at medium to high settings(Fallout 3, Dragon Age, Star Wars:TOR next year,etc..), Run multiple programs at a time, Noise isn't really a factor as I have 5 kids(I'm good at tuning things out), Storage is very important would like at least 2T, Reliability.. I don't want something that works great some of the time(So component compability is a must), And finally would like to move onto Windows 7 so as much RAM as I can cram in my budget.

So please help me select the best motherboard, GPU, CPU, PSU (any other acronym ending in U lol) HDD, etc, etc... that will help me build an adequate machine. Thank you for your replies.

Currently the intel i5 is the best bang/buck quad core processor if you will overclock it some.

Dual graphics cards are something you can do if you want, but in general a single more powerful card is a better idea. There are rare cases where availability or a strange price point cutoff makes dual cards a better value.

You should look at the builds by usage sticky to get some example parts lists as a place to start.

Yeah, I'm getting the impression Intel i5 is the way to go for CPU...

As for GPU there are a lot of fans of the ATI 4850, but I also hear they are becoming more exspensive. So a running a single faster card is probably the way to go. Any recommendations here?

Mobos I really need help on... I would like one with at least 2 PCIe2 slots

PSU: Will really depend on the GPU decision, but I figured I'd like to go a least 850w just in case

RAM:D DR3 would be my preferred route, as I'll run this build until games exceed its abilitys

I really need help compilling a shopping list, have done this in a while. Thanks a lot for any help

This setup is under your budget and will kill games @ that rez, ( Really over kill ) and would allow for a 2nd GPU in a few years if you need to add one.

If your monitor goes out tomorrow it will give you the room to add a bigger Screen without worry's about will my GPU handle it.

If you will not get a bigger monitor even if yours does brake, then we can redo the build with different parts.

My 2 cents for your needs and budget

You wont the huge HAF 932 or Antec 1200 for an i5 system with 5850s. The HAF 922 or Antec 900/902 will handle two 5850s fine.

Looks like niklas got you hooked up with good parts lists.
