Well, I have a few friends with the Phenom II x4 965, and 1 of them got theirs stable at 4.2ghz, other can't get to 4ghz (Probably because its not C3) I seen a few people get to 4.4ghz on the 965, so it depends on the chip. the 965 should do at the vary least 4ghz, it might do lil higher.

And you would need a decent aftermarket cooler to get it there as well.

Have fun!

If you overclock this CPU by the slightest bit, none of the powersaving functions work, it'll be burning at 125watts idle.

Which isn't a problem for many but, electricity isn't cheap for me.

That depends on the motherboard, Some will disable the power saving, while others will overclock to or beyond 4ghz and still idle around 1ghz, with C1E, Cool n Quiet, and all the fun stuff enabled.

agreed. after much effort, i managed to get cool n quiet AND c1e working with overclocking, on a new motherboard.
Asus Sabertooth 990fx
(i have an amd 975 / AM3)

very nice. The Gigabyte was lacking.

Thank you for your reply, you're spot on.

To anyone new, reading - Don't forget to switch to power saving mode in your control panel's power optons, it defaults to balanced.

With the CPU cooler you are using probably 4ghz, that coolers limitations are the 4 heat pipes and the wide aluminum gap directly over the CPU Die, underneath the heat spreader, IMO cooler Master would had been better to have run 5 heat pipes so one would be directly over the center or a solid block contact.

Nevertheless since that is the cooling you are running load temperature will probably be your limiting factor since in my own testing I reached 4.3ghz stable on air cooling using a Xigmatek S1283 HDT cooler running 110cfm cooling fans.

Your thread title of How to overclock the Phenom II X4 965 and since it is a Black Edition CPU running an unlocked multiplier this should help you overclock it.

If you are concerned regarding electrical use as the 2 posters above have mentioned, this guide is probably not for you, but if you want to get as far as you can then it is for you.

Most overclockers want all they can get from the CPU and the first thing they do is disable all voltage restrictive CPU capabilities, to reach those goals, but that is totally up to you.

Good Luck in your OCing adventure.

This will help you as well.
