laptop is a new ibm factory image T40 with XP Pro SP1
after just one connection to windows update and all critical updates
applied,
this event comes up in the xp event log
"Could not successfully write the Controller Command Byte for the i8042"
it seems to point to something getting screwed up with the trackpoint
device/driver

I doubt if youd like my suggestion. which is to dump Microsoft(Reg) and
install an up to date version of Linux or IBM os2.

Good, so does it have the problem with suse as well as XP?
If it does itl be a hardwareproblem or a master boot sector problem.

Try the IBM update utility, which searches your model of pc for needed
driver updates specific to it, and will install them for you. I seem to
remember several lately related to the trackpoint.
