does anyone know how to retreive the data and reset it without losing everything?

If safe mode works, that is probably the easiest way to get the data off, but a Linux LiveCD distribution is often very handy for this sort of thing as well.

You should be able to do a repair install without losing the data. Programs will need to be reinstalled, along with a large number of updates (possibly even service packs) will need to be applied, but the data will remain.
