I am looking to build a NAS for my home. I will be using primarily to store Pictures, Songs and high-def videos (avc, mkv), etc. I have close to 3tb of above stuff in various drives that I want to store in a central location.

Here are my requirements:
Budget: $600-$700
Drives: 4 to 6 bays
Tower Size: As compact as possible
Motherboard: No preference
Processor: Fastest and best I can find (core 2 duo, celeron M, etc)
Memory: atleast 4gb
Raid: Software only
SATA: atleast 6 internal and atleast 1 external

I do have experience in building PC's. Initially I was going to get Thecus 7700. With drives and all it will be over $1000. If I could build something similar around 700...that will be great. I will be using freenas.

I really appreciate all your input.

Thanks
Kevin

All parts from newegg.com. Total after tax & shipping will be a tad over $700. If you must fit your budget, swap the mobo out for:

ASUS M4A78LT-M LE AM3 AMD 780L Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail
DDR3 up to 1800, Express Gate, Hybrid CrossFireX
$64.99

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131619

The big differences betwen the ASUS & the MSI is ASUS has 2 ram slots and MSI has 4. More slots = better & cheaper upgradability. i.e. 2 2x2GB kits is cheaper than a 4x2GB kit. Also, MSI has HDMI out if that matters. (to me, yes) Both mobos have 6 SATA connectors.

Why AMD? Cuz if you go with C2D, C2Q, Pentium Dual or Celeron Dual, you're building on outdated technology that's LGA 775 & DDR2. There may be a few DDR3 boards for those cpus, but the price is over $100. AM3 is here to stay. You can upgrade the AM3 cpu to anything.

Optical drives aren't necessary. Download embedded & write it to USB on another pc, and boot it up on the assembled server. You need to set up boot order in bios.

p55ibexpeak thank you so much...

Here are my thoughts...please comment

1) can I go with..AMD Athlon II X2 250 Regor 3.0GHz Socket AM3 65W Dual-Core Processor Model ADX250OCGQBOX

2) MSI mobo has only 5 SATA...(its ok )

3) Why do I need 80GB HD ....If I can run freenas OS from a USB thumb drive

4) I want to go with 3 x 1.5TB hard drives for now (looks like 2TB HD are still expensive)...

I don't want to skimp on better/best parts even if it adds another $200 to the budget...

Thank you for saving me the time. It's more or less what I would have recommended to the OP.

However I do want to point some things out:
1. Why the 80GB drive?

2. You will need extra SATA cables.

3. 4GB is probably overkill for a NAS.

1. Yes, you can, but why?

2. You can always use a adon card

3. Exactly what I asked

4. Go with 3x 1TB Samsung F3s then. F3s are some of the fastest HDDs out right now.

Yep, anything even a Phenom II X4 Black, it's up to you. I prefer energy-efficient 45W cpus.

2) MSI mobo has only 5 SATA...(its ok )

My bad. I thought it was 6. If you need 6, go with the ASUS mobo.

3) Why do I need 80GB HD ....If I can run freenas OS from a USB thumb drive

I thought it was going to be a Ubuntu server. You can drop that one.

4) I want to go with 3 x 1.5TB hard drives for now (looks like 2TB HD are still expensive)...

Sure. Best do a RAID 5. The 1.5TB prices have dropped quite a bit to where 1TB is in terms of gigabyte per dollar.
