I'd love to find a bad 5000 series unit that is not worth repairing so
that I could grab the (hopefully) working Ethernet port out of it.
Lightning got me.

I checked with the guy here who repairs these units, and he wants $99 to
repair. ReplayTV will repair it for $79. Why would I NOT want to use RTV
for the repair, if I decide to have it repaired? The unit works with the
modem, but now I cannot share programs.

Describe the motherboard.... Since I know nothing of what's inside the
box (yet) is this a special, propertary module or is it a standard buy
it anywhere card or perhaps an older "They don't sell them any more"
card... (If the latter I might be able to help you)

Bad 5ks go for as much (if not more) as the repairs you quote. The 5k
ethernet chip is soldered to the board and requires sophistication to
replace.

Replay "repairs" nothing. They send you a "refurb" from units returned
because of HD failure or users too stupid to connect/use them.

I doubt you could get a unit from Replay unless you wait months. The
last sale wiped out the 5ks. More than likely they would offer you a 55XX.

If you can ship it back to RTV for less than $20 and they don't charge
to ship it back then the only difference might be time. I would think
that the $99 fix would be faster and, in the long run cheaper when
shipping is considered.

It's proprietary. The only thing that appears to be standard is the hard
drive.
