I have never used a wireless router before and I am not sure I should get one, but it would be great to get these cords out of the way. My real question is how well do these things transmit through walls? And what type should I go with?

Completely depends on your wireless environment. Things like what the walls are made of, wireless phones you might have, neighbors wireless devices can't be answered here and that is what determines your coverage. That and the quality of the radio's you intend to use for your Wireless LAN. Any advice along those lines are purely anecdotal. My wireless environment and overall coverage area won't be the same as yours because the variables are different. Everyone's will be. Test and see, that's how you find out how well walls be penetrated at your house.
Having said that, most houses will be covered by a single Access Point. As long as your walls are not concrete or use rebar you should be fine.
Linksys is a big player and their current router allows you to put some pretty interesting firmware. Big plus if you like to play around with the AP. Might as well buy .11g gear unless you want to save a few bucks and don't transfer alot of files locally. .11b will be fine if internet is the only thing you plan on sharing.
