Blinking cursor after card reader install

After installing a cheap 3.5 in card reader, I get the blinking cursor of death... removing the USB from the MB returns the computer to normal operation. I disabled the reader (which is seen in the BIOS) from the boot order, and disabled 'boot from other device' and still get the same results.

Any ideas?

Try resetting to factory settings, then resetting your CMOS. Could be your mobo still thinks it has to read the card reader.

I wrote that poorly - if I just unplug it, the computer boots fine. I am trying to get it to boot with the card reader installed. Wondering if I got a defective unit
