i5-750 is a quad core, all other i5s are dual cores, albeit with hyperthreading.

what he said, Intel is confusing uneducated customers this time around. I do not mean uneducated = stupid either, i mean that the average user that walks into best buy who does not know what to look for in a CPU...

------------------------------ - ASUS Rampage Formula - Intel Core2Quad Q9650 @ 3.6GHz - MSI GTX 460 1GB - NZXT Phantom 410 white - Corsair TX750 - G.Skill 4GB DDR2-800 - WD Caviar Black 640 GB 32-meg cache - OCZ 30-GB SSD - Hyper 212+

Yeah Intels not being v smart

I3 = dual core with Hyperthreading
I5 except 750 = dual core with hyperthreading and self Overclocking when able
I think the I5750 is a quad but with out the hyperthreading
I7 = quad with hyperthreading

also to make things worse...

not all I7's fit into the same socet the I7 860 is a differnt socket to the i7920

I mean what is intel really thinking, they can make a kick ass CPU with all its fine complexities but they cant get branding correct, which even a 7 year old could do lol

To make it simple

I7 9xx & 8xx are quad cores with hyper threading (with turbo)
I5 7xx are quad cores without hyper threading (with turbo)
I5 6xx are dual core with hyper threading (with Turbo)
I3 5xx are dual cores with hyper threading (without Turbo)

other things to keep in mind, I7 9xx are triple channel and support x16 x16 for dual graphics cards, others are dual channel and they can only do x8 and x8 with dual or x16 for single.

the best price vs performance i would chose would be the core i5 750, if you are new and want to get the best performance and save then get the i5 750.

Thanks for all the info, folks! Turns out I played it safe (I need a new FAST computer for HD video editing) and got an H-P with an i7 860.
