What's the most prudent motherboard with a particular socket that will allow a wide range of CPU upgrades?

Being a college student, I can't afford the best CPU in the market and will have to go with what i can. But then I don't want a motherboard which won't allow much CPU upgrades in the future, as I'm planning on getting a better cost efficient CPU upgrade when I'm financially stable without having to upgrade the motherboard. I'm not necessarily looking for one that will allow the best CPU, but something that can support huge variety of CPU's.

The AM3 Socket allows the most upgrades. AMD only has one socket, Intel has more then most care to know.

The AM3 will allow CPUs from dual core to six core.

So should I be looking for an AM3 socket motherboard or something with an AM2+/AM3 socket support?

AM3, so you can use DDR3 memory.
