I assume and hope we all use firewalls here, whether it's software or hardware and it's all good that you can block software from accessing or being accessed from the Internet. BUT, have you ever wondered what actual data the software you allow access to, sends out? Maybe your instant messenger software uses XML to format your message and send it to out into the internet.
The thing is, once you've allowed a piece of software access, you can't really monitor what data it's sending, maybe every hour it sends the addresses of all the websites you've surfed in the last hour, or it sends a directory liting of your harddrive, how do you know?
Is there is a piece of software that you can install on your machine which records all information which leaves your computer or even it might let you choose which program to monitor?
Many thanks.
Hatim.

Network sniffer, or if you've got an extra box around, setup Ettercap, and use arp spoofing to put it in between yoru computer and your gateway(not much different in those uses than a sniffer, but I like the interface on ettercap
