8800 Ultra in New System Upgrade Needed?

Last response: in Graphics & Displays

Hi All,

I have to rebuild a new system due to lightning strike and looking for Graphic Card update advice.

Previous System:

OS - XP Professional
AMD Athlon 64 FX-55
ASUS A8N SLI-Deluxe
Raptor 74 Gig in Raid 0
SLI Nvidia GeForce MSI NX8800Ultra-T2D768E-HD-OC

New System:

OS - Win 7 64 Bit Ultimate
Intel i7 920
ASUS P6X58D Premium
6 Gig OCZ Gold DDR3 1600
From Other System (SLI Nvidia GeForce MSI NX8800Ultra-T2D768E-HD-OC)

After building the system I am not seeing much of an improvement in Game performance! I thought I could just use the 8800's when I had to build a new system and thought they would perform better than they did in my now dead system but I am not seeing it.

Any thoughts why the performance doesn't seem any better and it is worth upgrading to a newer Graphics card?

Thanks....

Needed to add. My resolution is 1900 x 1200. Running both cards in SLI and I confirmed they are DX10. Both cards are factory Over Clocked. Thanks again for all the input.

No, 2 8800 Ultra's probably maxed out the game.

Can we please use full names? I don't want a new lurker googling Q66.
Q66-->Q6600, 2 extra digits.

OP, what games did/are you play(ing)? Resolution? Etc, only CPU-bound ones would show improvement, GPU-bound ones won't.

Well for one, those cards were beasts before BUT they were not DX10 as they are based on g80 or g92 architecture. The later revisions of 9800gtx and gtx+ did have PhysX, CUDA, more shaders, less heat, and Hybrid SLI compatible. Their stock clocks were higher as well so your cards will still be a little "weaker" in terms of preformance. Albeit this setup of your can still max out most games today with few exceptions such as Crysis,Stalker CS, Dirt2, GTA4, and Far Cry2 at max settings.

If you want, besides checking preformance on youtube or other sites on how your two Ultras stand today, you can check out the preformance of 2 9800gtx+'s, 2 GTS250's or in the recent SBM at Toms, they had 2 4850's in Crossfire and another article of the 5770 in crossfire which would be about the same or a bit less in terms of FPS as your system.

Also update your drivers.

Yes they were :heink:
The Geforce 8000 series was the first to ever support DirectX 10.

You will SLAUGHTER Far Cry 2 with 2 8800 Ultra's.

How the crap does the G80 "or" G92 core not have DX10? The G80 core had CUDA.

Liquid, do some freaking research before you post next time, look at your other posts too.

Add a third 8800 Ultra for Uber Performance!!!!!!!

Oh, no wait, they are impossible to get ahold of now. Doh! :D .

Anyway, it just depends on what games you are playing. If your your CPU is at stock speeds (which would be a shame for an i7 920), then there may be instances where your CPU is the bottleneck. If you were playing games where you were more GPU bound, then you wouldn't see too much of an improvement if your previous system was not holding your two 8800 Ultras back in those instances.

just buy another of those 8800ultras and run SLi... That will kill most games out now and most oncoming games. Dont bother going for a whole new card. And if you do buy a HD 5850 or HD 5870! xD Or HD 5970 if you got a case big enough and a PSU powerfull enough.

I see:
1. Tri-Sli is inefficient
2. Power hungry
3. 8800 Ultra rare
4. 8800 Ultra runs hot, 3 of them don't help cool it

I think anand had a write up ( benchmarks ) and FarCry2 capped out at 75fps.....cpu bound. I think they were using the same one you are.... bad game to bring up. 8800gtx was DX10. All $600 of it. Minga. ....... The only thing you could do for an upgrade is get the next gen card/cards. The architecture is different and will allow you to turn up the goodies whereas I'm sure the 8800's must tank by now, no ? Mine did but not always. You won't see a whole heck of a lot in MORE FPS but you will get smoother game play with higher settings and your minimum frame rates will be higher...... no stumbles or jitters so to speak. You have W7 so a DX11 card would be the ticket. 5870 or wait for the new nvidia card. DX11 does add to the gaming experience........

Thanks I am running in SLI now with both of them. I do allot of online gaming. Current games Conan, EQII and Lord of the Rings Online. Stand alone games Crysis ran fine before. Still need to reinstall many games and 3D Mark to do some testing but in Conan it almost seems like I have less FPS than I did with the older system. I did have the older system memory and CPU Overclocked a bit. MSI overclocked these cards from the factory with a program to overclock on the fly as well.
