Portable External Hard Drive Recs

Forum Storage : Hard Drives Portable External Hard Drive Recs

I very recently just bough an HP Pavillion dm1 notebook (with the E-450 1.66Ghz APU / Radeon HD 6320 graphics upgrade if it makes any difference) for college.

I haven't installed much on it yet. I don't want to overload it. My friends suggested I buy an external hard drive. Sadly, none of really knows much on this subject. So, I'm hoping to get some advice.

What I'm looking for is...
Memory: 320 GB+
Budget: $100
Notes: I want to be able to use it portable media library BUT more importantly as a backup. I've been told to stay away from Western Digital which apparently has been reputed to have trouble working with multiple computers? I need to gather files anyway from my previous HP mini and MSI desktop so yea.
EDIT! No loud sounds please~! I work mainly on the 'quiet floors' of my library, so I can't have that happening. Thanks again!

So far, I've started considering the HP 500GB Pocket Media External Hard Drive

If you have any comments or recommendations, I'd appreciate it very much!
