I am not able to format my memory stick, it says that disk is write protected

What do you mean by memory stick... a USB flash drive or a memory card for a camera... the camera memory card should have a little switch on it, switch it to 'unlocked'. If it's a USB flash drive, right click on it and check the properties... may have to un-check the box that says 'read only'

Some devices have a little sliding write protect switch to prevent accidental overwriting - look for one.

Or the device may be simply broken. Copy off it what you can, and then smash it into little pieces with a hammer.
