Cant connect to desktop from laptop

Hello,
okay i have a sony vaio windows 7 laptop and gateway desktop with vista. I had the networking working an able to print and all, but now my laptop can't find the desktop nor can my desktop find the laptop. whats going on?

Have you turned off firewall on both machines ?

What is the printer connected to? You seem to be suggesting that it is connected to the desktop and was shared with the laptop. Is the laptop connecting by wireless?

Have you installed a firewall or something like Norton or Zone Alarm?
