AMD FX-6200 overclocking.

Hello, I'm pretty new to overclocking, so naturally I've got some questions. I've been looking around and saw some posts through google searches that suggest that going with an FX processor was the biggest mistake i could have ever made, either way I'm happy with it, so oh well.

I'm trying to overclock, i run prime95, cpu-z, and speedfan (to monitor temps), and I'm noticing in cpu-z the multiplier keeps changing and I'm not sure why. I set things back to default, and it's still doing it. so it seems about 50% of the time my cpu is running at 1.4 GHz. is this normal? why is it doing this? especially when there is a program like prime95 running.

I've got one other question also. this is where I bought the CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... it was marketed as a 3.8GHz cpu, why am I only getting 2.8?

It is absolutely normal! You CPU has P-States which reduce its clock and voltage whenever it isnt fully used. The lowest of which drops your CPU to a multiplier of 4.

ahh thanks for the answer. I've been reading a guide here on how to OC an amd processor, but I'm having some trouble finding some of the info I need. for example, voltage. I know its important to be careful not to go too high, but I can't find anywhere that says how high is too high!

best way to learn how to overclock is to watch youtube videos even if the video isnt your motherboard and cpu get loads of bits from vids and just try on ur own max temp for fx 6200 is 62c make sure u got good cooling case and a good after market cooler. will be making a video for youtube soon to show how to overclock the fx 8150 so similar chips hopefully not to different. keep eye out for "stewie198269"

well I did end up overclocking it to about 4GHz last night, i did a very minor change to the voltage i brought it up from like 1.22 to 1.29 and everything is running cool, and stable. I ran prime95 for about 5 hours, and had no errors. So I think I'm pretty ok, I just don't know what to look for in case it starts to have stability issues.

if u have stability issues up the volts bit at a time u should be good at 4ghz tho as most cpu clock upto 4ghz on stock coolers and at normal volts try not to go over 1.4 volts more volts means more heat try to keep them down 1.29 is good for ur volts and to have run 4hours on prime95 even better if u dont plan on overclocking anymore u should be fine to just leave it and it will run ok but u prob get the bug to overclock more now u have tried the once best way i can say how to overclock is to log into windows run prime95 have a AI suite open and change things that way rather than keep restarting all time. whats ur motherboard?

Yea, I don't plan on overclocking any more than 4GHz, lol I'm not a huge speedfreak, and don't have the best watercooling in the world. my board is a gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2P

Pretty nice CPU, I suggest to hold on it bro, The fx 6100 was known with its bad cooling system thats why i didnt get it but its a beast thou.

Belive its a good 4 year future proof :)

I am overclocked at 4.2ghz using a Corsair H60 2013, it runs at 39 degrees whilst prime 95 is running, I am abit cautious about pushing any further how far has anyone gone?

I've gone to 4.3 before, but bf3 started crashing, so now I'm running at your current clock.
