I noticed that even though no internet browser or email program was open, the internet connection icons (on the taskbar) shows that there is an active internet connection. The computer icon on the right (behind) the left one (for my computer) is staying lit up all the time, and when I try to disable the connection, I get an error message that reads "Error Disconnecting" "It is not possible to disconnect at this time. The connection is currently busy with a connect or disconnect operation."
Has my computer been hijacked?

Sorry about the newbie question. The packets sent/received from the internet gateway continue to climb even when there is no browser or email program open.
If you really want to disable it go to control panel network connections right click on the connection and pick disable. To scan for malware I like this tool.
