upgrading RAM. Dimension 3000. DDR. replace 2x256s with 2x512s. BIOS shows correct. windows XP still shows 512. try 1x1GB stick. windows shows 512. hook up spare HDD. run automated XP install, check RAM, 1GB (correct). something has gone wrong with windows. i really don't want to erase the HDD and reload. tried resinstalling chipset driver. i really have no idea. if no one has an idea, i suppose i will just have to back-up and reload, but i don't want to. please advise. thank you in advance.

Did you check compatibility and speed, It may require a bios update, if they have one.

bios is up to date. tried several different brands, speeds, sizes. BIOS always shows correct. only in XP is the amount of RAM not displaying correct. also, i installed windows on a spare HDD laying around and the RAM shows correctly. it's a software problem.
