I3 processor vs core 2 duo

can i upgrade core 2 duo to corei3 or corei7

No, the MB of C2D is LGA775 platform.

Core i3 and i7 require LGA1156/LGA1366 MB

You'll need a new motherboard to upgrade to an i3 or i7. Although if you are just upgrading the CPU then go for a Core2 Quad. You won't need a new motherboard and you will see better performance from a C2Q than an i3 due to the two extra cores. If, however you wanted the i7 a new board is a must Hope this helps!
