What is your graphics card? It's unlikely that your cpu is causing the bottleneck.

thats the thing.. i haven't really picked a graphics card yet. but, i'll probably buy the radeon 6850. not to mention i have a low res 1360x768.. do you think i should just buy the gtx550 ti since its such a low res? i want to get around 50-40 fps on ultra..

for BF3 alone, as far as i can recall, most of the hardware reviews i see makes note that despite the clock speed, you're not gonna see a lot of change in fps when OCing the CPU. it's the GPU that counts.

other games though, you'll see some improvement by OCing.

That's a GTX 550ti or radeon 6850 right there.

bf3 multiplayer is much more cpu dependent than the single player benchmarks would show, but on a 6850 it will still be bottlenecked by the gpu. Not to worry, at 1366x768 you should have a smooth frame rate.

the 6850 is a good choice, the only other I might recommend is possibly going with a 7770, and OC it, if that's something your into. I wouldn't go much lower than that though, at a that res you can use these cards for a while.

i read reviews that the 6850 beats the 7770.. is it because the reviews are stating that the 6850 beats the 7770 at higher resolutions?

According to tomshardware's performance review on BF3 you need a HD 6950.BUT you can also buy a GTX 570 for 200$ which can max it at 1920x1080 with 50 fps.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

BUT if youve got the extra money you should definetly take a look at his HD 7870
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
It will be around 10% faster than a GTX 570 while consuming a lot less power.

"i am on HD6850 and can play bf3 with 30-45 FPS. my RES-1440X900.

The 7770 is typically faster than the 6850 in DX11 applications. The link is BF3 high settings (DX11) and it shows the 7770 being faster than the 6850 at every resolution (1024 x 768 to 2560 x 1600).

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/HIS/HD_7750_7770_Cro... or http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-7770-7750...

Given, it is only 1 or 2 fps faster but that is on the old drivers. The 7000 series received a boost with the 12.6 drivers. I had a 6850 overclocked and it is not faster than the 7770 I am currently running now. Also, the 6850 I had wouldn't overclock very well and the 7770 overclocks like a beast. All while using way less power.

Also, their is a price difference now.

The cheapest 6850 on Amazon is $147. The 7770 is $130 before a $15 rebate.

when your ready to overclock your unit, let me know...

ok thank you, sir. so, just for clarification, i shouldn't overclock the cpu for bf3 because it wouldn't make a difference.. but for multiplayer, is it the same way? i just want to get the highest FPS on ultra possible with the radeon 7770. keep in mind i want to play 64 player games.

I guess you don't see all the post saying the same thing.
HD 7770 is not that good.

then what gpu do you recommend for at least 1600x900?

I run BF3 at 1920 x 1080 on ultra and average 48fps on my 7770. I do have AA turned down to low. That is it. Everything else is on ultra.

The hatred with the 7770 is all because it came in at the same price point as the 6850 which at the time was about 5% faster on average in DX 9/10 and usually tied with the 7770 in DX 11.

As for which card to get, I don't think it matters. I run mine @ 1175 Mhz Core / 1535 Mhz memory. Stock is 1000 Mhz core / 1125 Mhz memory. Rarely do I see temps over 60C. For $130, you cannot beat these cards.

ok thanks for posting. i'm glad that you can help me choose a video card. its just after seeing a lot of nerd rage in forums about the 6850 being a lot better than the 7770, it kind of sparked ideas on whether i should actually by the 7770 or not. so kind of give me more detail on your settings. its at dx11 right?

Overclocking Gpu and Cpu For Bf3 is a must i can say ... gpu oc will help in increasing ur max FPS and the cpu overclock will help u in increasing ur Min FPs ... this is only required for Mp gameplay singleplayer works cool on stock ... this is if ur using an i5 2500k or any other above with a Hd 6870 or GTX 560 ti u can easily get 50+ fps on 1920x1080 and on high settings with ambient occlussions and MSAA OFF !! so ocing to 4.2 ghz is a must !
