I know...don't ask why, but I am helping a friend upgrade her old
760ED Thinkpad to Win98SE. I did this for another friend and had this
same problem. Upon booting up in Win98, the display is very
small...only the middle 50% of the screen, surrounded by black. Weird.
I downloaded an IBM XGA driver patch and applied it but that didnt
help. ANy idea what might cause this? On another note, every other
boot seems to lock up with a blinking cursor (before Windows loads).
If I reboot again, it works properly. TIA for any helpk you can give
me.

When a new OS or even a reinstall of the old OS, screen resolution is set to
default 640 x 480
VGA resoluiton. Right click the desktop, choose settings and set to 600 x
800, 16 bit color resolution.

Jeff,
you might want to check ibm.com for any info on 98se and power
management issues , some of the thinkpads have problems with se . ibm
has complete manuals for the thinkpad available for download .
hope this helps,

Thanks, but I don't see any problems. And the 640x480 is not it
either. It is not the resolution of the screen, but the size of the
viewable area. Very weird problem...
