Cannot find wpa wireless encryption

I am running Windows XP and it only seems to offer WEP encryption

Which XP Service Pack have you ? Your wireless adapter should detect your router's correct encryption type (if the router is set to WEP that's the answer).

If not, which XP Service Pack have you ?

Does your wireless adapter have its own connection utility ? That may support WPA.

Perhaps the wireless adapter is an old (wireless b) model and only supports WEP.
