XP won\'t recognize external hard drive

I have an external hard drive NEXSTAR -3 2.5 " but am unable to connect to my XP computer. The drive connects OK on my laptop but I have tried every possible remedy to connect it to the PC, but without success. After many attempts , and extensive search on the net , I have been able to get the XP Disk Manager to recognize the USB Mass Storage Device under Universal Seriel Bus Controllers but I cannot get it to appear in My Computer. When connected via USB cable, there is a 'clickcing noise 'in the external drive but I can't hear the disc rotating . I would be grateful for any assistance you can give . Thank you for your early attention to this matter.
