Pheno II x4 925

looking at the 720 BE and the 925 for a gaming/multimedia rig mostly gaming. will buy when nvidia releases GTX 300 series cards in hopes of 5850 prices falling. will be for a ddr3 system. haven't been able to find benchmarks for 925. current games include Bioshock, Warhammer DoW 2, looki at AvP when it comes out, Bioshock 2 as well, maybe crysis. price difference is $40.
i do not edit video, most i do w/ music is move it it onto computers then onto mp3 player. will not be using auto cad pro E or Softworks on this computer.
any links to 925 benchmarks would be greatly appreciated

  1. What's your budget?

Where do you shop for parts?
  2. budget for board, memory, processor, cooler, and video card is 550, maybe 600 to 650, but i'm really aiming for 550 or under. i'm looking at newegg compusa/tigerdirect, and frys electronics. not sure if the fourth core is worth the extra 40 for most games and apps as the 720 has an unlocked multiplier for a high core clock and a lot of games don't fully utilize multiple threads.

Sure the PSU is overkill, but it's a combo deal and you wouldn't have to upgrade it again even if you get the HD 5850(500W) or even HD 5970 (650W). I don't know which specific chipset you want for overclocking the cpu. If you want a better board:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131402
  4. have psu, 750Watt w/ 45 Amp on 12v. hoping for 5850 so i can run a phys x card w/ patch from ngohq with a strong ati card.
  5. i found a phenom 2 x3 720 BE for 110 with free shipping is it worth the extra 40 for the 925 at ~150 ish with free shipping?
  6. Best answer
Drop the PSU & GPU. Throw in a 5850.

    $140 shipped.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103656

Depends, if your usage requires a quad, yep, pay the extra $40.
  7. how well does the 720 BE perform in quad core optimized games?
  8. None of the games you mentioned require a quad core cpu to run. Since you asked for it:

    http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Reviews/phenom_ii_x3_720be/13.html

    http://www.sharkyextreme.com/hardware/cpu/article.php/3261_3801711__10

World in Conflict is a RTS that can make use of quad cores.
  9. when they program games do they program so that games scale with the number of available cores or do they optimize the programing for a certain number of cores?
  10. Gen-speak, the OS will optimize available cores. If the software is optimized for quads, it'll run better than those that's not. Only a handful of games are. And the majority of the software is video/audio encoding/decoding & 3D rendering.
  11. These are both the same price on Newegg:

    Phenom II X3 2.8GHz 720 BE
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103649

    Phenom II X4 3.2GHz 955 BE
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103674

Given that, the 720BE doesn't seem to be a good value. It's not quite apples to apples because the X4 is 125W TDP vs. the 95W TDP of the X3 but is that a concern? If it is, then I think the X4 925 or 945 is still a better value. I guess it depends on your OC requirements and your power requirements.
  12. Give this processor a look too. It's a good $50+ cheaper than the above:

  13. i found an oem part 110 with free shipping, since i ordered a better cooler i have no need for stock cooler that comes with the $165 model
