Desktop replacement?

My girlfriend is looking to buy a laptop as a desktop replacement... but I had a few question first. Can you run a laptop 24/7 like a desktop (plugged in, of course)? Are there issues with heat? She'll occasionally be taking it to work, but if she left it on at home all weekend, would it cause problems? She's specifically considering a Dell Inspiron 8200 (P4-M 1.6). Thanks in advance for any advice/help?

My suggestion would also lean toward the Dell 8200. The cooling on this system is quite effective, and is happy to be left on all the time. But if it is running CPU intensive applications 24/7, then the cooling fans may produce quite a noise (i.e. audible from the next room), if not, then it will hibernate or whatever you desire when it is not being used. but heat is not so much an issue as noise.

My brother has two IBM (T series) laptops running 24/7 at his house without any heat issues.

..this is very useful and helpful place for information...
